The Difference Between あげる, くれる, もらう
あげる(ageru), くれる(kureru), もらう(morau) show who gives and who receives an action, and it’s closely tied to politeness and perspective.
1. あげる(ageru) = “to give (to someone else)”
【A】The speaker gives something (or does something) to another person.
Example:
私は 友だちに プレゼントを あげました。(Watashi wa tomodachi ni purezento wo agemashita.)(I gave my friend a present.)
【B】With te-form action: The speaker does something to another person.
Example:
私は 友だちに 本を 読んで あげました。(Watashi wa tomodachi ni hon wo yonde agemashita.)(I read a book (for) my friend.)
2. くれる(kureru) = “to give (to me / to someone close to me)”
【A】Another person gives something to me (or to someone in my in-group, like family).
Example:
友だちが 私に プレゼントを くれました。(Tomodachi ga watashi ni purezento wo kuremashita.)(My friend gave me a present.)
【B】With te-form action: Another person does something to me (or to someone in my in-group, like family).
Example:
友だちが 私に 本を 読んで くれました。(Tomodachi ga watashi ni hon wo yonde kuremashita.)(My friend read a book (for) me.)
3. もらう(morau) = “to receive”
【A】The speaker (or someone close to the speaker) receives something from another person.
Example:
私は 友だちに プレゼントを もらいました。(Watashi wa tomodachi ni purezento wo moraimashita.)(I received a present from my friend.)
私は 友だちに プレゼントを もらいました。(Watashi wa tomodachi ni purezento wo moraimashita.)(I received a present from my friend.)
【B】With te-form action: The speaker (or someone close to the speaker) has something done by another person.
example:
私は 友だちに 本を 読んで もらいました。(Watashi wa tomodachi ni hon wo yonde moraimashita.) (I had my friend read a book for me (I received the favor.)
📌 Important Differences
あげる → I give to you / I do for you
くれる → You give to me / You do for me
もらう → I receive from you / I get something to do
📌 Favor nuance with te-form
When combined with te-form, these verbs don’t just mean “to give/to receive,” they mean doing something as a favor:
説明してあげる → I’ll explain (for you).
説明してくれる → (They) explain (for me).
説明してもらう → I get (them) to explain (for me).
